For many people, Instagram is just a place to connect with different people, friends, family, and share photos, videos, and more. On the other hand, Instagram is an amazing platform to showcase their talent and to market their business, particularly in its sector.
However, different people have different goals on their Instagram account, but the channel has tons of options for every user. The channel gives users several customized options through which they can survive in the social media industry as per their convenience.
Instagram has been growing over the years, and with the growth, the platform has created a lot of opportunities for people around the world. The channel has made it easy for marketers and creators to show and proof their talent among millions.
With growing users, bullies and online abuse have taken growth over the years too. According to research, about 37% of young people between the ages of 12 and 17 have been bullied online. 30% have had it happen more than once.
As per the data, among millions of social media users, there are half of the people find themselves victims of targeted harassment on social media channels and are bullied over the largest network. And Instagram is counted as the darker place for kids and teens that are being abused and harassed over the channel by the fraud people. As per the records, 72 percent of teens in the United States used Instagram in 2018- the data made the site the second most popular online platform for that particular age group. But, one more research showed that Instagram provides the most powerful place to bullies.
Reports and analytics show that more youths have experienced cyberbullying on Instagram than any other platform. Facebook bullying data closes around at 37%, moreover, Snapchat ranked 3rd at 31%. While the video focused platform YouTube only witnessed 10% cyberbullying.
The scariest thing about being attacked online, teens say is that you don’t know who is doing the attacking. “In real-life bullying, you know who is doing i.,”
With every increasing count of cyberbullying over social media platforms, the channels have been trying to provide more and more safety to its users and create a useable platform. For example – Facebook rolled out a method for people to hide or delete multiple comments at once from the menu of a post and brought new ways to search and block offensive words from showing up in comments. It also rolled out a new way to report bullying on behalf of others and is offering the opportunity to appeal decisions related to bullying and harassment.
Similarly to Facebook, other platforms like Snapchat also upgraded their privacy policies, Snapchat allowed the users to Report Abuse and it guarantees that the reports are viewed and actions are taken within 24 hours. It provides various options like Report a Story, Report a story over the web, Report a Snap Someone Sent, Report Snapchat Account, Hides Something on Discover and so on.
Every upgraded feature of Snapchat stops different kinds of online abuses and like Snapchat many other channels such as YouTube and Instagram are finding more and more options to provide security to their users against cyberbullying.
Recently, being the biggest social media platform with over 1 billion monthly active users, Instagram rolled out a way to provide security against online abuse. Instagram’s customized features include privacy settings which users can set as per their needs, their content visibility and more. And with such outstanding features, Instagram has launched a new “Restrict” feature recently.
You might be wondering that what the “Restrict” feature is all about, and the article has your answer. Read on the article and know everything about the “Restrict” feature and the way to access the option.
Instagram’s new feature is launched with the aim to secure innocent people from abusive and bad comments. Yes, the main motive of releasing this feature is to make the channel completely secured for the users.
It is obvious that social networks always have different plans to secures their users and in case of reducing the risk of bullying and harassment across the channels, every social network has taken multiple steps.
Teens say most bullying takes place over direct message, Instagram Stories, or in the comments section of friends’ photos.
“There is no place for bullying on Instagram, and we are committed to fostering a kind and supportive community. Any form of online abuse on Instagram runs completely counter to the culture we’re invested in —a platform where everyone should feel safe and comfortable sharing their lives through photos and videos,” this was told by an Instagram spokesperson to The Atlantic in September. Along with this, Instagram rolled out a new feature to protect against cyberbullying called Restrict.
There are numerous ways for bullies to harass someone over social networks, that is why the Restrict feature over Instagram is very helpful to stay protected, and it offers various features so that any kind of cyberbullying could not happen over Instagram.
What Is Restrict Mode?
The new Restrict feature lets account owners effectively shadowban a user who comments on photos with offensive or abusive language. This feature first went into public testing in July. Restrict is essentially a middle ground between blocking and doing nothing.
Instagram’s Restrict feature is sneaky. The new feature lets the users “restrict” any person who is bothering the users on the app, whether they’re sending them hurtful comments or sliding into the DM’s with unnecessary messages.
When the users add them to their Restricted Accounts list, a few things will happen. For starting, the comments they leave on your posts will automatically become private; that means the user and only the commenter will be able to see them.
However, if the user who has restricted the comment decides to show it, it will be visible to every viewer.
The Restrict mode can be activated for specific accounts by swiping left on a comment or heading to your privacy settings, or doing so on the person’s account.
The Restrict Mode basically functions to remove hatred over the profiles and allows the user to not get notified about them; the comments they are making, or posting and so on.
Restricting someone’s ability to comment will also affect direct messages. Any attempt to send a direct message will move to a message request and notifications won’t be sent to the user who restricted.
Another plus point Restrict Feature provides is that it allows the user to view the messages from the bully but it does not send any kind of read receipt to them.
The “Restrict” feature is an additional precaution that users can take to protect themselves from harassment and bullying on the site. Instagram already allows people to block accounts and manage comments. Still, bullying is a problem on Instagram.
Along with the Restrict feature, Instagram also rolled out a new feature called “warning” that will work when the user is about to post a negative or inappropriate comment. Instagram previously said it was working on the new warning labels. The feature doesn’t prevent people from leaving negative comments, but it will nudge the poster to “rethink” what they are saying before posting. “Are you sure you want to post this?” the message says while posting a negative comment. This feature is basically dependent upon previously reported comments by the users and works in reference to those comments.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri wrote in a blog post that some early tests of the feature had positive results. “It encourages some people to undo their comment and share something less hurtful once they have had a chance to reflect.”Though he didn’t provide specific data on how effective the warning labels have been.

Blocking a bully on social media doesn’t always bring an end to online abuse. And in some cases, it can make face-to-face interactions with the bully even worse. That’s what Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, said when he found about the experience of teenagers with bullying on the platform Restrict mode is a good alternative for users as they will be able to keep an eye upon their bullies and it will help the users to take any action against cybercrime.
Mostly, blocking over Instagram does not stop bullies and leads to a worse result. They will find different ways and will keep on doing it. The Restrict feature would be a better source for the users and especially for the teenagers who are being harassed on the account.
