Twitter is planning to figure out, is the conversation that people have on Twitter healthy and right? Are the conversation putting the users in the right direction? This question has raised after the series of tweets sent Thursday by CEO Jack Dorsey, who first issues a pseudo-apology for the kinds of abusive and aggression filled content on Twitter.
Jack Dorsey tweeted, ” We have witnessed abuse, harassment, troll armies, manipulation through bots and human-coordination, misinformation campaigns, and increasingly divisive echo chambers,” Dorsey wrote.”We aren’t proud of how people have taken advantage of our service, or our inability to address it fast enough.”
Means now Twitter has a new plan, it wants to know the impact of conversation on Twitter. Facebook is also trying to do the same as well because the company is also worried about the conversation and posts that take place on the platform.
“If you want to improve something, you have to be able to measure it,” Dorsey continued. “The human body has a number of indicators of overall health, some very simple, like internal temperature. We know how to measure it, and we know some methods to bring it back in balance.”
Measuring the health of human interaction is not clear, but the CEO of Twitter is working to find out its way. In his tweet, he also mentioned a nonprofit organization that proclaims a mission on its website to “foster a healthy public sphere,” as an organization that is inspiring Twitter’s work. Dorsey also mentioned four indicators that can help Twitter in measuring the health of conversations. The non-profit organization described them as-
Shared Attention: Is there overlap in what we are talking about?
Shared Reality: Are we using the same facts?
Variety: Are we exposed to different opinions grounded in shared reality?
Receptivity: Are we open, civil, and listening to different opinions?
Twitter also issued a request for proposal to get ideas and help from outside the company, Jack Dorsey tweeted, “We simply can’t and don’t want to do this alone. So we’re seeking help by opening up an RFP process to cast the widest net possible for great ideas and implementations,”
Since its launch, Twitter has been the best social networking websites that have served home to the interest users. From a place of online harassment and bullying to the thanksgiving formalities, from free speech to the conversation with anonymous users, the platform has been the most used websites.
Twitter has tried hard to handle and clean all the mess in recent years, it even rewrote its guidelines, and has started shutting down bots’ accounts. The company has also even started to punish the users who breach its rules and regulation. And now it is taking an interesting move to quantify the health of its own product.
It all seems to stem after the 2016 presidential election in which everyone has learned about the Russian bots used Twitter to try and propagate among voters. Twitter is stepping on Thursday feels like an emerald branch for politicians in D.C. There have been rumors ever since the election that Congress may try and access social media companies that were caught sleeping at the wheel. This is a way for Twitter to show everyone that it is proactively efforting to enhance discourse on its platform.
This could be one of the reasons Facebook is also trying to measure its impact on society health. Last year, Facebook released a study that found that social media, sometimes people with the crummy feeling. The company then used the reports to change its newsfeed algorithm to start showing people more posts from friends and family as compares to publishers and businesses.
The feels like Facebook and Twitter are having a similar moment. Twitter is now asking an important question -what role do we play in the health of society?
